Helmuth Scheibler
(Ludwig) Helmuth Scheibler (born February 19, 1882 in Monschau , † April 13, 1966 in Berlin ) was a German chemist and professor .
Life
The son of the Monschau synthetic wool manufacturer Alexander Scheibler (1850–1929) and Emma Hedwig, née Scheibler (* 1858), sister of the art historian Ludwig Scheibler from a cousin of the extensive Scheibler family , studied chemistry in Geneva, Munich and Berlin. In 1909 he was at the Nobel Prize winner Emil Fischer with a thesis entitled Synthesis of dipeptides of active Valine doctorate . From 1908 to 1911 he was Fischer's research assistant, where he dealt with Walden inversion in addition to peptides . In 1915 he completed his habilitation on the occasion of a garrison stay at the Technical University of Charlottenburg, today's Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin). The title of his habilitation thesis was: On the chemical components of the sulfur-rich, bituminous tar oils (ichthyol oils). After working as assistant and senior assistant for a long time and working as an associate professor (and from 1924 as a full professor), he was appointed head of the organic-chemical institute at the TU Berlin in autumn 1945. In April 1955, Helmuth Scheibler retired .
Act
He specializes in various areas of organic chemistry . Scheibler was able to show that the ichthyol oils, which have been used for rheumatic diseases since ancient times, contain alkylthiophenes as an active ingredient. From ichthyol oil, he isolated a preparation contained therein in 12 percent by weight thiophene- sulfur, which was marketed under the trade name Eutirsol . Further research was devoted to thiophene isoligenes of sulfanilic acid and corresponding sulfonamides . Helmuth Scheibler devoted himself in detail to the chemistry of divalent carbon. Scheibler recognized the Schiff bases in the isocyanides , and the oxime of carbon monoxide in the knallic acid (wrongly formulated as HONC at the time) . In 1960, S. Skell characterized Helmuth Scheibler as a "pioneer of carbene chemistry ".
An important academic student of Scheibler was Hans-Werner Wanzlick , later also professor of organic chemistry at the TU Berlin.
