Helvi Jürisson

Helvi Jürisson (from 1953, Helvi Volkonskaja , from 1962 Helvi Soans , born October 5, 1928 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian poet , translator and children's book author .

Life

Jürisson spent her childhood in Kuressaare and graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1947. She then studied medicine at the University of Tartu from 1947 to 1953 . She completed her studies as a lung specialist and worked from 1953 to 1954 in a tuberculosis clinic in Moscow . She then worked at various hospitals in Estonia until her retirement in 1985.

Helvi Jürisson has been a member of the Estonian Writers ' Union since 1972 . She is the mother of the Estonian actor and musician Peeter Volkonski .

Jürisson made her debut in Looming magazine in 1956 and published her first volume of poetry in 1961. The critics saw good conditions for a continuation of the poet's career and praised the “remarkable form security.” In addition to love and nature poetry, the volume also contained “citizen poetry”, as it was called by contemporary critics, i. H. Poems that dealt with current social developments, including in Jürisson the praise of the "great achievements of the Soviet country". Half a dozen more volumes of poetry followed, in which the poet remained true to her subject matter and repeatedly took a stance on social issues. There is often a certain bitterness in this poetry, which makes it resemble Mats Traat .

Jürisson has also authored over a dozen books for children and young people, which have been translated into Bulgarian, Finnish, Lithuanian and Polish. Jürisson himself translated poetry from Bulgarian, French, Latvian, Romanian, Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian into Estonian.
