Villandi made his debut in 1957 and then only submitted two more volumes of poetry and a book of verses for children. Her lyric poetry is more intellectually related to nature and partly refers directly to the political circumstances of the time, as can be seen in the "defiantly bitter" verses of her debut. The main activity of Villandi, however, was editing and translating. She mainly translated from Russian and German, including Heinrich Böll , whom she was the first to translate into Estonian in 1958, which is why she is known as the “importer of the German Nobel Prize winner”, and Erwin Strittmatter .
