Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von der Goltz (born October 10, 1798 in Königsberg , † March 26, 1878 in Berlin ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

Karl was a son of the Prussian major Hans von der Goltz (1767–1861) and his wife Caroline, née Szenska (1770–1833). He still had five siblings.

Military career

Goltz joined the 1st Dragoon Regiment (Litthauisches) of the Prussian Army on August 21, 1815 . He was promoted to secondary lieutenant in mid-August 1818 and transferred to the 3rd cuirassier regiment and from the end of August 1822 he was assigned to the teaching squadron for two years. By the end of March 1837, Goltz had advanced to Rittmeister and squadron chief . In March 1848 he was promoted to major and regular staff officer and on October 9, 1849, he was entrusted with the management of the military riding school in Schwedt / Oder . On February 5, 1850, he was appointed director. From the beginning of December 1850 to the beginning of February 1851 Goltz was in command as leader of the mobile 7th Landwehr Cavalry Regiment. On January 31, 1853 he was appointed commander of the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment and in this position he advanced to colonel until mid-July 1855 . Goltz was given command of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade in Stettin on April 4, 1857 , became Major General at the end of November 1858, and was commander of the 2nd Cavalry Division in 1859 during the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War . At the end of May 1860 he was commanded as an observer to the maneuvers of the Swedish army . After Goltz had been entrusted with the leadership of the Guard Cavalry Division on September 16, 1862 , he was promoted to Lieutenant General on January 24, 1863 and appointed commander of this large formation . In this position he was awarded the Order of Saint Anne 1st Class in mid-June 1864 and, on the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service, in August 1865 the Order of the Red Eagle 1st Class with Oak Leaves. On March 8, 1866, Goltz was put up for disposal with a pension .

For the duration of the mobilization on the occasion of the German War , Goltz was reused in 1866 and appointed as the commanding general of the Deputy General Command of the 1st Army Corps . On January 3, 1867, he received the character of General of the Cavalry. Goltz was a legal knight of the Order of St. John and after his death he was buried on March 30, 1878 in the Berlin Invalidenfriedhof .

Goltz married on December 22, 1827 with Julie Krüger (1805-1884), divorced Fiedler. She was the daughter of the Justice Council Kruger. The marriage remained childless.
