Hemaris venata is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of moth (Sphingidae).
features
The moths have slender antennae with a relatively long hook at the tip. The undersides of the thorax , legs, abdomen and the tip of the tuft of hair at the end of the abdomen are yellow. In the holotype , a male of Ambon , it is remarkable that the veins 5 and 6 (M 1 and R 5 ) of the right fore wing are connected by a cross vein.
The genitals are similar to those of Cephonodes janus . The tegumen is strongly asymmetrical. The uncus is somewhat asymmetrical, but clearly twisted, so that the right lobe of the gnathos can be seen from the dorsal perspective. The uncus is divided into two different, diverging, blunt processes. The Gnathos is almost entirely divided into two praises, the left of which is slightly longer than the right. Both are curved to the side at their apex. The Juxta is truncated. The blades are wide, especially the left ones. The Aedeagus is strong and differs greatly from those of the other species of the genus Hemaris in that it ends in a compressed, strong, laterally toothed appendage.
Occurrence and habitat
The holotype of the species was caught on the Indonesian island of Ambon . There are two other records of the species in New Guinea . The species is the only one of its kind that occurs in the southern hemisphere and thus outside the Holarctic , where all other species occur. The origin of this disjoint occurrence is so far unknown.
