Hendrik Copijn , also called Henri or Hein by first name , (born March 3, 1842 in Groenekan near Utrecht , † December 23, 1923 in Utrecht) was a Dutch landscape architect .

life and work

Hendrik Copijn was born as the eldest child of Jan Copijn and Egbertje van Oostveen. His father worked as an architect and tree nursery gardener. Copijn's mother died when he was nine years old. The father married a younger sister of the deceased in the second marriage. Another son, Pieter Copijn, emerged from this marriage.

Copijn attended the technical school in Utrecht. He then worked from 1859 onwards and was also his father's partner in the J. Copijn & Zoon company . In this he dealt, as an autodidact , with the design of gardens. Henri Copijn's early designs are the Zandbergen landscape gardens in Huis ter Heide or the Hemelschen Berg in Oosterbeek .

After the death of his father, he took his half-brother Pieter into the company now known as Gebroeders Copijn , who took care of the company's gardening. During his partnership with Pieter Copijn, the period between around 1895 and 1905 was probably the most successful period in Copijn's professional activity.

The purely landscaped gardens were replaced by an eclectic mixed style. Examples of these gardens are the Hyde Park in Driebergen or Rams-Woerthe in Steenwijk as well as what is probably the largest and most important work by Copijn, the park of Kasteel de Haar in Haarzuilens near Utrecht , which was created between 1894 and 1914 .

Copijn, who was able to prevail with his design against those of the building contractor Pierre Cuypers and the other competitor Leonard Anthony Springer , designed the over one hundred hectare park area as a landscape park with integrated themed gardens of other styles of garden architecture.

After his half-brother left the company in 1900, Copijn took his son Louis and a few years later his son-in-law Cristian Hendrik Schouten into what was now the company H. Copijn & Zoon , where Henri Copijn worked for other activities, for example as a councilor , but was more and more just a silent partner.

Hendrik Copijn was married to Theodora Geertruida Wilhelmina van Leeuwen (1853-1914) since 1874. The marriage had six children.
