Henk Hofland
Hendrik "Henk" Johannes Adrianus Hofland (born July 20, 1927 in Rotterdam ; † June 21, 2016 ) was a Dutch journalist and author. From 1967 to 1970 he was editor-in-chief of the daily Algemeen Handelsblad and after its merger with the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant to form the NRC Handelsblad, from 1970 to 1972 he was one of three editors-in-chief of this daily newspaper.
Life
After his parents refused Hofland's wish to fight the Japanese at the end of the Second World War in 1945 , he did his military service after the war and then went to the Dutch East Indies . During this time he set propaganda films to music for the Dutch military . After his return, Hofland studied at the Instituut Nijenrode and then at the socio-political faculty of the University of Amsterdam . In 1953 he began training as a journalist at the Algemeen Handelsblad in Amsterdam . Hofland wanted to go back to university quickly, but since the international head of his newspaper offered him a permanent position, he buried this plan and never finished his studies.
During the Hungarian uprising of 1956, Hofland reported from Budapest that his car was shot at after ignoring a stop sign. This was followed by a steep career at Algemeen Handelsblad , and after holding positions as head of the international department and deputy editor-in-chief, Hofland was appointed editor-in-chief in 1967. He tried with a series of concept changes, including an opinion page under the direction of Hans van Mierlo , to stop the newspaper's loss of importance. This did not succeed, however, in 1970 the Algemeen Handelsblad merged with the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant to form the NRC Handelsblad . Hofland, who was now part of a three-man editor-in-chief, did not find the favor of the directorate in the following time, which finally released him from his position in 1972.
Since the newspaper Het Parool did not want him as a reporter (he was found to be too old), he switched to a variety of new jobs. He remained a television critic for his newspaper, wrote a weekly column for the Haagsche Post and from 1985 to 89 travel reports from the Eastern Bloc and worked for radio and television. Hofland increasingly resumed his book authorship , which had been put on hold during the time he was promoted to editor-in-chief of the Algemeen Handelsblad .
For this omnipresence Hofland was finally honored in 1999 by his colleagues in a special way: in a survey of newspaper editors about journalists of the twentieth century, organized by students of the School voor Journalistiek in Utrecht .

Oddities
Hofland, an advocate of liberal ideals all his life, was persuaded in the late 1960s by Haya van Someren-Downer (Member of the Tweede Kamer for the VVD ) and Harm van Riel (Chairman of the VVD) to become a member of their party. Someren-Downer even hoped that Hofland could one day become parliamentary group chairman, but Hofland was later expelled - he hadn't paid his membership fees.
