Henneberger House in Meiningen

The Henneberger Haus in the hen bergisch-Franconian district town of Meiningen in the Free State of Thuringia is a striking under monument protection standing timber-frame building from 1894-95 and a landmark of the former royal capital.

history

The Henneberger Haus was built from 1894 to 1895 by the architect and chief building officer Eduard Fritze by converting an existing building and two larger new extensions. It served as the domicile of the Hennebergische Altertumsforschenden Verein (HAV) and thus got its name. The inauguration took place in 1895 on the 63rd day of the foundation of the association founded by Ludwig Bechstein in 1832 . It presented the HAV exhibits in several exhibition rooms . On the ground floor, a tavern that still exists today was set up in the old German style. The HAV moved out of the building as early as 1905. In the 1990s, the half-timbered building was extensively restored. Today it houses a restaurant with a winter garden and beer garden, a guesthouse and three private apartments.

Building

The building is located on the northern edge of Meiningen's old town on the site of the former lower gate tower and the northeast corner of the Franciscan monastery , both of which were demolished in 1817. The basement of the half-timbered building consists of massive limestone masonry , the upper floors are historicized in the regional, Franconian half-timbered style of the 17th century.

A building of the former monastery is integrated into the south wing. The eastern part of the wing with bay windows and pointed turrets and an underpass for pedestrians symbolizes the former lower gate tower. A stone relief from 1603 from the church in Ellingshausen was placed above the middle archway .

Architect Fritze placed the north wing over the inner Bleichgraben, a moat of the former city fortifications. This wing is characterized by a three-sided balustrade , richly decorated half-timbering, wooden figures and wall paintings. There is a stylish, glazed veranda on the northwest corner and a semicircular stair tower with a pointed roof on the west side.
