Henning Stahlberg (born November 18, 1965 in West Berlin ) is a German physicist and professor at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel , Switzerland .

Life

Henning Stahlberg studied physics at the Technical University (TU) Berlin and did his doctorate at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 1997. He then spent six years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel. From 2003 to 2009 he was an assistant professor and then an associate professor at the University of California, Davis . Stahlberg has been researching as a professor of structural biology at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel since 2009 . He is also head of the technology platform Center for Cellular Microscopy and Nanoanalysis (C-CINA).

Act

Henning Stahlberg researches biological membrane systems from the atomic structure of individual proteins to the cellular context. Using light and electron microscopy , X-ray crystallography and electron tomography, he investigates the structure of ion channels and membrane transporters. In addition, he develops computer algorithms for the 3D reconstruction of proteins. With the help of these methods, Stahlberg succeeded, among other things, in elucidating the 3D structure of the “Type III secretion system” ( T3SS ) in intact bacteria . He was also able to prove that individual proteins at the needle base of the T3SS are elastic. He developed the 2dx software to model the 2D crystal structure of membrane proteins.
