Henning Witte (born February 26, 1634 in Riga ; † January 22, 1696 ibid) was a German-Baltic pedagogue and literary historian.

Life

Henning Witte was the son of the respected merchant and elder of the Great Guild in Riga, Johann Witte, the Dithmarscher . He studied at the University of Helmstedt and other German universities. An academic trip to Holland, England and Sweden rounded off his training and led to numerous scientific connections and correspondence. Witte returned to Riga in 1666, where he initially worked as a private scholar and wrote numerous publications. In 1677 he became professor of eloquence at the high school in Riga and held this position until his death.

The city archivist of Riga and author of the Rigas Council Line Johann Witte was his older brother, the city ​​physician Nicolaus Witte was his cousin.
