( Fabricius , 1775)

Henosepilachna guttatopustulata is a species of beetle fromthe ladybird family (Coccinellidae). It is considereda pest in its Australian homeland, as it feeds on leaves of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), whichincludesmany cultivated plants such as the potato and the tomato .

features

Henosepilachna guttatopustulata becomes 7 to 9 millimeters long. It shows the typical, hemispherical body structure of the ladybird with the arched wings . The basic color of the wings is black, with three spots on each one. The spot on the front end is reddish brown, it connects with closed wing-coverts along the middle line with that of the other wing to a large extent. The spot on the rear end of the wing is the same color but does not reach the center line. On the side of each wing there is still a yellow or yellowish brown spot. The pronotum shows the same color on the sides, the middle is black. The beetle is short but densely hairy.

distribution

The beetle is widespread in Australasia : in Australia especially in the states of New South Wales and Queensland , on the Bismarck Archipelago , in New Guinea , on the New Hebrides and the Solomon Islands .

Way of life

Henosepilachna guttatopustulata is part of the Epilachnini tribe , whose representatives are all herbivores. Both the larvae and the adults of this beetle species feed on the leaves of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). This includes not only native plants, but also introduced species such as the black nightshade ( Solanum nigrum ) and cultivated plants such as Duboisia , the aubergine ( Solanum melongena ), the potato ( Solanum tuberosum ) and the tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum ).

Damage is not only caused by eating, Henosepilachna guttatopustulata also acts as a carrier of plant viruses , for example the sonemovirus .

The larvae of Henosepilachna guttatopustulata are parasitized by the wasp Uga colliscutellum . It can therefore be used for biological pest control .
