Henri-Marcel Magne (* 1877 in Paris ; † July 1, 1944 in Champagne-sur-Seine ) was a French artist and professor at the Paris Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers .

life and work

Magne came from an old family of architects; his father was the architect Lucien Magne . After studying architecture, Magne learned to paint in the studios of Luc-Olivier Merson , Albert Maignan and Alfred Panon Desbassayns de Richemont (1857–1911).

For about ten years he took part in the Salon des Artistes Français of the Société des Artistes Français before finally turning to monumental decorative art, designing wall paintings, cardboard boxes and models for stained glass windows in public and religious buildings. Thanks to his friendly and professional relationships with architects specializing in the preservation of historical monuments, he was able to work mainly in the Île de France and in the Marne department. Together with his teacher Luc-Olivier Merson, he worked on the monumental Christ mosaic completed in 1923 in the Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre church in Paris.

In 1916, Magne was appointed to the Paris Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers, where he continued his father's work and supported the rapprochement between entrepreneurs, artists and craftsmen. In his classes he insisted on the need to acquire, in his opinion, neglected knowledge of the materials that were available to artists. In the laboratory of the Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers he himself examined materials such as concrete , aluminum and plastic . Well-known students of his were Antoni Teslar , Adam Gerżabek and Stasys Ušinskas (1905–1974).
