Henri Decaisne (also De Caisne, born January 27, 1799 in Brussels , † October 27, 1852 in Paris ) was a Belgian genre, portrait and history painter.

Decaisne studied from 1814 at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles with Pierre Joseph Célestin François and from 1818 in Paris with Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson and Antoine-Jean Gros .

From 1824 he exhibited his works in the Salon de Paris . In 1830 he visited the Netherlands to study the works of old masters.

His huge painting “La Belgique couronnant ses enfants illustres” (Belgium crowns its illustrious children) with dimensions of 6 × 5 meters brought him success in the Brussels Salon in 1839 and came into the collections of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels. It was not until 1840 that he was able to go on a study trip to Italy .

In 1842 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor . He also received the Leopold Order .

He was friends with the writers Alfred de Musset and Alphonse de Lamartine , who promoted him to inspector of the national museums in 1848.
