Henri Schaller (journalist)

Henri Schaller (born July 21, 1886 in Corban , † October 31, 1985 in Pruntrut ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic clergyman, journalist and newspaper publisher .

Life

Henri Schaller was born as the son of the farmer Joseph Schaller and his wife Anna, b. Dominé, born. He attended the Immensee high school and was ordained a priest in 1912 .

From 1913 to 1922 he was a teacher at the Gymnasium Immensee and in that time editor of Bethlehem the Bethlehem Mission Society . From 1922 he was editor of the Catholic daily Le Pays in Pruntrut , of which he was director from 1923 to 1969. He had a great influence on the Catholic elite in the canton of Jura and was known as an editor- in-chief for his daily moral-philosophical glosses , which he published under the name Lefranc ; In addition, he was active in leading positions within the Catholic press in western Switzerland .

During the Second World War he initially affirmed the Vichy regime , but changed over time and later supported the Resistance and campaigned for French refugees.
