Henri Stierlin

Henri Stierlin (born April 2, 1928 in El Hadra, Alexandria ) is a Swiss architecture and art historian, photographer and journalist.

biography

Stierlin is the son of the musician Henri Stierlin and the singer Marguerite Vallon. He studied law and classical philology in Lausanne and Zurich with a licentiate degree in law in Lausanne in 1954. He later received his doctorate in art history (Persian mosques) at the University of Grenoble (1976).

From 1955 to 1962 he was editor (editor) of the newspaper Tribune de Genève and also cultural journalist at Radio Suisse (and from 1963 to 1972 editor of the weekly magazine Radio-TV je suis tout ). He also created cultural programs for Swiss radio and television. Then he held a managerial position at the Rizzoli publishing house and bookstore , which specialized in art books. He published numerous illustrated books on art and architecture, specializing in particular in Islamic architecture, Egypt and ancient America and becoming a well-known architectural photographer. In 1972 he became the editor of the architecture magazine Werk – Œuvre . In 1963 he founded “Office du Libre” in Freiburg i. Üe. the series Architecture universelle . He is a citizen of Urdorf . He was married twice, in his second marriage from 1987 to the French Anne Richard-Molard , with whom he also published.

Stierlin advocated the thesis that the bust of Nefertiti was a forgery commissioned by the German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt , who wanted to use it to test ancient pigments, but was later unable to admit to them.
