Henrik Lilius

Johan Henrik Lilius (born February 3, 1939 in Vyborg ) is a Finnish-Swedish art and architecture historian .

Lilius received his PhD in 1967 while doing research at the Finnish Academy . From 1972 to 1976 he was director of the Institutum Romanum Finlandiae in Rome and the first art historian in this position. During his time on the board of directors, the research focus of the institute concentrated on bathroom equipment from the Renaissance . Lilius himself also wrote a comprehensive monograph on the history and furnishings of Villa Lante , the seat of the institute. Subsequently, in 1976, Lilius accepted a call to the former Helsinki University of Technology for the chair of architectural history. In 1983 he moved to the Chair of Art History at the University of Helsinki and taught there until 1993.

From 1993 to 2003 Lilius was Director General of the Finnish Antiquities Administration with the title "State Archaeologist". During this time he was Vice-President in 2000 and President of the World Heritage Committee in 2001, and held its 25th meeting in Helsinki in 2001 . In his extensive writings, Lilius has primarily dealt with issues of Finnish and Italian architecture .
