Henry Albrecht (born April 30, 1857 in Memel in East Prussia , † September 10, 1909 in Possenhofen ) was a German painter and draftsman.

Life

Henry Albrecht, son of a businessman, initially trained as a mechanical engineer, but then switched to the Berlin Art Academy, where he worked with Julius Ehrentraut , Paul Thumann and Otto Knille from 1876 to 1881 with interruptions . He earned his living with illustration drawings for Berlin humorous papers such as "Schalk" or " Ulk ". In 1882 he is said to have been a student of Otto Seitz , who taught painting technique at the Munich Art Academy . Albrecht's enrollment at the Art Academy for the winter semester of 1883/84 is documented. He also took part in the study visits led by Adolf Hölzel in Dachau. From 1888 he was a permanent employee of the popular magazines and family papers " Fliegende Blätter ", "Illustrierte Frauenzeitung", " Jugend ", " Kladderadatsch ", " Leipziger Illustrirte Zeitung ", " Die Gartenlaube " and "Schorer's Familienblatt", in 1890 also in New York short-term magazine "The Illustrated American".

Albrecht also provided the drawing templates for illustrations for numerous book editions, including some of the novels published by the Berlin publishing house “Kürschner's Bücherschatz”. Ernst Wilhelm Bredt, who wrote the entry on Albrecht for the artist lexicon edited by U. Thieme and F. Becker, particularly appreciated the quality and freshness of his sketches, drawings and watercolors based on nature.

According to information in the Dictionnaire des Illustrurs (Marcus Osterwalder, ed.) Albrecht occasionally used the pseudonym Othello ; In 1909 he voluntarily passed out of life in Lake Starnberg.

Albrecht was awarded the Grand Ducal Saxony-Weimar Jubilee Medal (donated in 1892).
