Henry Allen John Bathurst, 8th Earl Bathurst , DL ( May 1, 1927 - October 16, 2011 ) from 1942 to 1943 known as Lord Apsley , was a British peer , soldier and politician of the Conservative Party . Most recently, he was best known for an altercation with Prince William .

life and career

Bathurst was born as the eldest son of Allen Bathurst, Lord Apsley and his wife Violet Bathurst, Lady Apsley (née Meeking) and attended Eton College , Ridley College in St. Catharines , Ontario , and Christ Church at the University of Oxford . After his father fell in World War II in 1942 , he inherited the title of his grandfather Seymour Bathurst, 7th Earl Bathurst , in 1943 .

Bathurst entered the military in 1948 and served with the 10th Royal Hussars and later the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars .

Membership in the House of Lords

With the title of Earl Bathurst , he also inherited the then associated seat in the House of Lords , which he could only take up later for reasons of age. He gave his inaugural address on June 2, 1960.

He later held political offices under Harold Macmillan as Lord-in-Waiting ( Whip the government in the House of Lords) from 1957 to 1961 and as one of several under-secretaries in the Home Office from 1961 to 1962.

With the House of Lords Act 1999 he lost his hereditary seat in parliament.

He was Deputy Lieutenant of Gloucestershire from 1960 to 1986 .

Bathurst was involved in an argument with Prince William in the summer of 2003 . According to the sources mentioned, the incident occurred at the Bathurst estate, who was driving a Land Rover SUV, when Prince William overtook a VW Golf after playing polo at Club Bathurst . Bathurst was unsure of the driver's identity and angry at what he saw, which he described as a reckless disregard for traffic rules. In his attempt to keep up with the prince, Bathurst was eventually stopped by the prince's security team.

Speaking to the BBC , Bathurst said that "there are polo club rules about driving on the Bathurst family estate and people should obey them." Clarence House made a formal apology to him that it was not an injury came.

Bathurst married Judith Mary Nelson on March 20, 1959, and they divorced in 1976. They had three children together:

  • Lady Henrietta Mary Lilias Bathurst, born October 17, 1962
  • Hon. Alexander Edward Seymour Bathurst, born August 8, 1965

He married Gloria Wesley Clarry on January 17, 1978, daughter of Harold Edward Clarry († 1982).

Bathurst died on October 16, 2011 at the age of 84.
