Henry C. Gunning

Henry Cecil Gunning (born September 9, 1901 in Belfast , † July 24, 1991 ) was a Canadian geologist .

Life

Gunning grew up in Vancouver , where his father had a hardware store, and studied geology at the University of British Columbia from 1918 with a bachelor's degree in 1923. He then worked briefly as a miner before he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he 1927 received his doctorate. He then worked for the Geological Survey of Canada , where he mainly dealt with the geology and deposits on Vancouver Island. But he also mapped in Québec . From 1939 he was Professor of Geology at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and head of the Faculty of Geology. In 1953 he became the dean of the Faculty of Applied Science there and founded an engineering geology course there. In 1959 he gave up the professorship, did research in Rhodesia and was a consulting geologist. He helped set up the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

In 1937 he received the Barlow Memorial Medal from the Canadian Institute of Mining. In 1956 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of British Columbia. In 1966 he received the Logan Medal and he was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada .

The mineral gunningite was named in his honor.
