After William Ufford, 2nd Earl of Suffolk , his mother's brother died in 1382 with no surviving children, Ferrers inherited part of his property. In 1385 he accompanied King Richard II to Scotland. However, he died in 1388 at the age of 32.

Ferrers had married Joan Hoo († 1394) before April 27, 1371, a daughter of Sir Thomas de Hoo and Isabel de St Leger of Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire . With her he had a son, William Ferrers (1372–1445), who became his heir.
