Henri François Le Dran

Henry François Le Dran ( October 13, 1685 - October 17, 1770 ) was chief surgeon at the Charité in Paris and royal field surgeon.

He taught alongside Jean-Louis Petit at the Académie royale de Chirurgie in Paris. Le Dran devoted his primary focus to the treatment of gunshot wounds as well as cancer . He introduced the thought, which was groundbreaking for the time, that breast cancer, at least initially, is local in nature. Only when it has made its way into the lymphatic system is the prognosis for the patient bad. Le Dran consequently removed the entire breast including the lymph nodes in the armpit. He saw pain as a useful tool in locating deep abdominal wounds. In 1737 he introduced the term shock ( choquer ) into medicine.

Along with Petit and Sauveur François Morand, Le Dran was one of the most respected surgeons of the 18th century.
