Henry Gréville (around 1870)

Henry Gréville , pseudonym for Alice Marie Céleste Durand, b. Fleury (born October 12, 1842 in Paris , † May 26, 1902 in Boulogne-Billancourt ) was a French writer .

Life

Alice Marie Céleste Fleury was a daughter of the writer and Parisian Professor Jean Fleury (1816-1894), of the 1857 University of Saint Petersburg was appointed. Under the guidance of her father, whom she accompanied to Russia, she made serious studies in languages and natural sciences . She married Émile Durand, one of the French professors at the St. Petersburg Law School, who later worked as an art critic under the name Durand-Gréville. In 1872 she returned to France with her husband.

If she had already published a few novels, such as À travers des champs and Sonia , in the St. Petersburg newspapers , she was now even more eager to continue this activity in Paris. She initially attracted attention through the novels Dosia (1876) and L'expiation de Savéli (1876), in which she presented images from Russian society that were as new as they were attractive and true to nature with a thoroughly original talent for representation. Here she was able to rely on her own experience. Dosia was crowned the Montyon Prize by the Academy in 1878 and had a total of 66 editions by 1890.

The later works of the author followed one another, perhaps a little too hastily, but nevertheless received the favor of the reading public and were translated into almost all languages of Europe. She died of hyperemia in 1902 at the age of 59 when she was staying at Paul Sollier's clinic in Boulogne-Billancourt.
