Henry Purkitt Peabody

Henry Purkitt Kidder (born January 18, 1823 in Boston , Massachusetts , † January 28, 1886 there or in New York City ) was an American businessman and philanthropist. In 1865 he co-founded the investment company Kidder, Peabody & Company , whose shares were traded on Wall Street until 1994 and which ultimately became UBS AG .

After his school education in Boston - including at the Boston Latin School - Kidder worked for the auction house Coolidge & Haskell (1838, at the age of 15), the railroad company Boston and Worcester Rail Road and the banking house John E. Thayer & brother where Kidder became a partner in 1858 in recognition of the skills he demonstrated during the economic crisis of 1857 . The company was renamed Kidder, Peabody & Company in 1865 and quickly developed into one of the leading banking houses in New England, taking over the American agency for Baring Brothers and Company . Kidder became head of Kidder, Peabody & Company and held that position until his death.

Kidder donated large sums of money to charities and served on numerous boards of directors, including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Harvard College . From 1876 to 1886 he was president of the American Unitarian Association . In 1880, Kidder was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Kidder had been married to Caroline W. since 1847, who died in 1881. His second marriage was to Elizabeth Hindehoper (or Huidekooper). Upon his death, Henry P. Kidder once again bequeathed sums of money to the Museum of Fine Arts, Harvard College, Massachusetts General Hospital, and various societies and churches. Most of his $ 2.25 million fortune went to his wife and three sons from his first marriage.
