Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch, 5th Duke of Queensberry KG , KT (born September 2, 1746 in London , † January 11, 1812 at Dalkeith Castle ) was a Scottish nobleman and politician.

Henry Scott was a son of Francis Scott, Earl of Dalkeith , and his wife, Caroline Campbell, Baroness Greenwich. He followed his grandfather Francis Scott, 2nd Duke of Buccleuch , in 1751 as Duke of Buccleuch , since his father had already passed away at this point. Through his grandmother, he was a descendant of James Douglas, 2nd Duke of Queensberry , and after the death of William Douglas, 4th Duke of Queensberry , in 1810 also became Duke of Queensberry .

From 1764 to 1766, Henry Scott was accompanied by the philosopher Adam Smith as a tutor on his educational trip through France and Switzerland. There were longer stays in Toulouse, Geneva and Paris, where he a. a. Voltaire , Benjamin Franklin , Turgot and Francois Quesnay .

The Duke was from 1777 to 1812 Governor of the Royal Bank of Scotland , as well as Lord Lieutenant of Haddington (1794-1812), Midlothian (1794-1812) and Roxburghshire (1804-1812). Scott was the first President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh since 1783 and a friend of the writer Walter Scott .

He was married to Elizabeth (1743–1827), eldest daughter and heir to George Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu , with whom he had the following children, since 1767 :
