Henry Selby Hele-Shaw (born July 29, 1854 in Billericay , † January 30, 1941 ) was a British engineer and professor at the University of Liverpool .

Life

Hele-Shaw was a pioneer in the fields of automotive engineering and aviation . In 1922 he was president of the British engineering company IMechE ( Institution of Mechanical Engineers ), which is comparable to the German Association of German Engineers (VDI) .

The Hele Shaw cell is named after him, which consists of two (usually transparent) plates with a small distance from each other, with which the flow and pouring processes taking place can be observed. In rheology , the generalized Hele-Shaw flow model (GHS) is used to describe the flow between two plates. Software for simulating flow processes in thin-walled areas (e.g. filling processes in injection molds) often offers the more imprecise, more computationally load-friendly 2.5D Hele Shaw flow model in addition to the volumetric 3D calculation.

In 1924 he improved the automatically adjustable aircraft propeller , also known as the Hele Shaw propeller. Although the acceptance for this new technology was not very high at that time, 20 years later this concept has established itself in aviation, but also in other areas.

Hele-Shaw is said to have been an avid mountaineer and with Sir David Randall Pye (1886-1960), who was also President of the IMechE in 1952, to have carried out first ascents. The latter was the biographer and friend of George Leigh Mallory , who died in 1924 while trying to climb Mount Everest, not far from the summit.
