The Heptapteridae ( Gr .: hepta = seven, pteron = fin) are a family of catfish-like (Siluriformes). They live in fresh waters from Mexico to South America .

The fish are 3 to 35 centimeters long. There are three pairs of barbels around the mouth . The skin is usually bare; H. scaly, the adipose fin large, the caudal fin deeply split. The fish can easily be confused with catfish (Pimelodidae).

Systematics

The family was previously counted as the subfamily Rhamiinae to the antenna catfish. According to phylogenetic studies, they form a clade with the catfish, the great-mouth catfish (Pseudopimelodidae) and the genus Conorhynchos , which is classified as the superfamily Pimelodoidea .

Genera and species

There are about 210 described and about 50 still undescribed species. In addition, eight genera have been identified, which have not yet been named and for which an initial scientific description has not yet been published.
