Conorhynchos conirostris is a species of fish from the order of the catfish-like (Siluriformes), which occurs endemically in the Rio São Francisco in Brazil . It is the only species in the monotypical genus Conorhynchos . The exact systematic position of the species is currently unclear. The species is of regional economic importance and is considered threatened due to environmental pollution and the destruction of its habitat by dam construction projects.

features

The species reaches a maximum length of about one meter and a weight of up to 13 kilograms. The barbels are very short. The lower mouth has thick, wrinkled lips that can be stretched out and rolled outwards when at rest. The gill trap has numerous, dense thorns that cross each other and thus form a kind of filter.

Way of life

Conorhynchos conirostris feeds mainly on molluscs , insect larvae and small crustaceans that are ingested from the ground. The species performs migrations.

Systematics

The species was variously assigned to the catfish (Pimelodidae). However, recent anatomical and molecular biological studies speak against this classification. The species is therefore currently not classified in any family , but together with the catfish, the great-mouth catfish (Pseudopimelodidae) and the Heptapteridae in the superfamily Pimelodoidea .
