Christopher Ross "Chris" Doig (born February 13, 1981 in Dumfries ) is a former Scottish football player .

Career

Doig was already in the 1996/97 season for the in his hometown Dumfries-based club Queen of the South in the Second Division used. In 1997 he moved to Nottingham Forest and made his league debut for Nottingham at the age of 17 on Boxing Day 1998 in the Premier League match against Manchester United . His second use in January 1999 against Coventry City was also his last first division use, after his opponent Darren Huckerby scored three goals, he received no further use this season and the club was relegated to the second division at the end of the season.

Although coach Paul Hart in particular , who looked after the club between 2001 and 2004, relied on the defensive qualities of the multiple Scottish U-21 international, he made more than ten appearances in hardly a season. Countless injuries prevented continuous operating times and ensured that he could not participate in most of the games. After Nottingham had to relegate to Football League One in 2005 , Doig's contract was not renewed. He then moved to the Football League Two at Northampton Town , for which he had already played on loan under coach Colin Calderwood in the fall of 2003. Started as a promotion favorite in the season, the club finished second at the end of the season and thus rose to League One. In early 2007 he took over the captaincy from Scott McGleish after he was put on the transfer list.

Doig also had injury problems at Northampton, so he missed the last two game days in the 2008/09 season when the club slipped to a relegation zone due to two defeats. His contract, which expired in the summer of 2009, was not renewed by the club and he signed a two-year contract with the Australian A-League club Central Coast Mariners . Doig was a regular player in his first season with the Mariners, but had to take a break in November and December 2009 due to a muscle injury. In the 2010/11 season he was ousted by new signing Patrick Zwaanswijk from the team, who formed the central defense with captain Alex Wilkinson . The Mariners reached the championship finals in the course of the season, Doig mostly came from the bench to 13 missions. He was not used in the play-offs and was not part of the matchday squad in the final defeat. He therefore left the Mariners in February 2011 and moved to Indonesia for a few months in the Indonesia Super League to Pelita Jaya , where the Australian Misha Radovic was the coach.

In the summer of 2011 he was back in England and trained with the Wycombe Wanderers , but received no contract offer. Later in the year he trained at Aldershot Town , where he signed a one-month contract in early December. After two appearances in League Two, his membership ended in January 2012 again, shortly afterwards he was brought by Gary Mills to the fifth division club York City . With York City he won the play-off final of the National Conference at Wembley Stadium in May 2013 and rose with the club as a result in League Two. After another season with York, he was not offered a contract extension by coach Nigel Worthington .

For the 2013/14 season he joined the fifth division Grimsby Town and was also part of the coaching staff. In the following season he moved up to the position of player assistant coach, with the end of his playing career in 2015 he became assistant coach under Paul Hurst . In 2016, the club managed to return to the Football League . In October 2016, he moved with Hurst to third division Shrewsbury Town , where he continued to work as an assistant coach. In the summer of 2018, the team switched to the second division club Ipswich Town , but the three-year contract was terminated after five months at the end of October 2018 after only one win from the first 15 league games and the club was bottom of the table. In May 2019, Hurst and Doig took over third division relegated Scunthorpe United , and at the end of January 2020 both resigned from their positions.
