Herbert Altrichter

Herbert Altrichter (born February 27, 1954 in Vienna ) is an Austrian educator and university professor. He is Professor of Pedagogy and Educational Psychology at the Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU) and heads the Department of Pedagogy and Educational Psychology at the Institute for Pedagogy and Psychology.

Life

After graduating from high school , Herbert Altrichter studied education and psychology at the University of Vienna (1972–1978). After receiving his doctorate , he worked as a university assistant at the Universities of Vienna (1978–1980) and Klagenfurt (1980–1991), where he completed his habilitation in the subject of educational science in 1988 . In 1991 he was appointed associate professor for business education with a special focus on school education at the University of Innsbruck . Since 1996 he has been a full university professor for education and educational psychology at the JKU. From 1995 to 1999 Altrichter was the Austrian delegate to the Governing Board of the Center for Research and Innovation in Education (CERI, OECD , Paris). He is also a member of various advisory bodies (e.g. advisory board of the Institute for School Development Research at the Technical University of Dortmund , the Bielefeld Laboratory School , the Center for Research into School Development Processes at the University of Hamburg ).

Altrichter strove for the professional and institutional development of Austrian educational research. He was one of the proponents of the Austrian Society for Research and Development in Education (ÖFEB) and was elected its founding chairman (2000–2001). He is also the founding editor of the journals journal for school development, journal for teacher training (StudienVerlag, Innsbruck) and Zeitschrift für Bildungsforschung (Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, Wiesbaden) as well as the publisher of the book series "Educational Governance" (Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, Wiesbaden) and "Studien on educational research and educational policy ”(StudienVerlag, Innsbruck).

Main focus of work and research

Altrichter is known in German-speaking educational research for two research contributions. On the one hand, together with Peter Posch ( University of Klagenfurt ), he further developed the English teacher researcher concept for teaching and school development in German-speaking school systems (see practical research ). In addition, he worked with Thomas Brüsemeister ( University of Giessen ) and others to develop the educational governance approach, which is used to examine the management of school systems, in German-language educational research.
