Herbert Balke

Herbert Balke is a German engineer and university professor in the field of technical mechanics .

Balke studied applied mechanics at the Technical University of Dresden, where he completed his PhD A and PhD B in the field of plasticity theory . After working as a professor for continuum mechanics at the Technical University of Chemnitz from 1992, Balke returned to the TU Dresden in 1994 as head of the chair for elasticity theory and fracture mechanics . In this role he succeeded Hans Göldner . Despite his retirement in 2010, Balke continues to hold lectures on advanced technical mechanics as a senior professor at the professorship for mechanics of multifunctional structures , the chair of his successor Thomas Wallmersperger (as of 2016).

On the basics of his subject, Balke published a three-volume series of textbooks under the title Introduction to Technical Mechanics , which Springer- Verlag published in several editions .
