Herbert Breiteneder (born November 25, 1953 in Gmünd ; † April 5, 2008 near Prebl near Wolfsberg in Carinthia ) was an Austrian racing driver from Amstetten . His nicknames were "Breiti" or "Herbie".

Breiteneder was a trained car technician, hobby band leader for many years as an organist and took part in his first rallycross race in a VW Beetle 1300 in 1975 . The two-time FIA European rallycross champion and five-time Austrian rallycross champion was voted Motorsportman of the Year in 1987 in his home country, ahead of Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger . In 1991 he made his rally debut at the Semperit Rally after having previously contested two hapless European rallycross championships with an Audi Sport quattro S1 (an ex- Walter Röhrl car) with over 650 hp . Most recently he ran a rally team with his son Patrick, sporadically and alternately driving a Seat Ibiza KitCar with a 2-liter four-valve engine and over 250 hp.

Deadly accident

On April 5, 2008, Herbert Breiteneder and his co-driver Marco Mayrhofer drove a special stage of the Lico- Lavanttal-Rallye , when he went off the road in a fast curve for unknown reasons, hit trees and fell straight down an embankment. While Mayrhofer was only slightly injured, Breiteneder died within a short time at the scene of the accident from serious internal injuries despite quick rescue attempts.
