Herbert Christ (Romanist)

Herbert Christ (born September 13, 1929 in Berresheim, today Mayen , † February 26, 2011 in Düsseldorf ) was a German Romance studies and foreign language didactic.

life and work

Christ studied philosophy, history and Romance philology in Bonn and Brussels from 1949 to 1956 and then went to school, which took him to the Essen grammar school in Borbeck and the St. Hildegardis grammar school in Duisburg. There he was also the head of the study seminar. He received his doctorate in Bonn in 1966 under Karl Dietrich Bracher with the thesis The political Protestantism in the Weimar Republic. A study of the formation of political opinion by the Protestant churches in the mirror of literature and the press (Bonn 1967). From 1974 to 1995 he held the chair for didactics of French at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen , 1978–1979 and 1988–1989 also dean.

Christ was the founder of the Giessener Contributions to Foreign Language Didactics series , co-editor of the magazines Praxis des Neusprachlichen Studium and Der fremdsprachliche Studium (FU), co-organizer of the spring conferences on research into foreign language teaching , President of the Conseil d'Administration of the Société Internationale pour l'Histoire de l'Enseignement du Français Langue Etrangère ou Seconde (SIHFLES), as well as a member of the executive committee of the graduate program “Didactics of Understanding Another”.

Christian was the commandeur of the Palmes académiques. Together with his wife, he founded the "Herbert and Ingeborg Christ Foundation for Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages" in 1999.
