The St. Hildegardis-Gymnasium is formerly a girls -only high school in Duisburg , sponsored by the diocese of Essen . From the 2014/2015 school year, starting with the 5th year, boys were also accepted. Lessons take place in girls 'and boys' classes (bi-education). In religious education and in differentiated subjects, the genders are mixed ( coeducation ).

The school is currently attended by around 760 students. The school profile of the grammar school is based on a Christian self-image. In addition to the lessons, the students receive special support in social, charitable and musical projects.

history

The school was founded in 1898 by the Katholisches Bildungsverein e. V. on Grünstraße as a Catholic Lyceum to improve the educational situation of the girls in Duisburg. The school sisters of Our Lady , a Catholic school order, took over the lessons .

The school quickly gained wide recognition. As early as 1902 and 1905, the school building was expanded to include another wing and a gym. In 2011, an upper school center on Grünstraße was handed over to its destination.

On July 28, 1912, state recognition was achieved, and in 1927 a women's school was approved. In 1928 the school became an upper lyceum, so that the first Abitur examination took place on February 14, 1931, in which all 16 candidates passed.

Like many other Christian institutions, the Catholic Oberlyzeum also suffered from the reprisals of the Nazi regime , so the High President of the Rhine Province only approved the classes Tertia (today 8 and 9) and Prima (12 and 13), so that the school was Had to close on March 30, 1938. The entire property, land with buildings and inventory, had to be sold to the city of Duisburg.

After the end of the Second World War , the Katholische Bildungsverein e. V. claims for reparation and repurchase of the entire property with the city of Duisburg, which corresponded to this request on January 10, 1948.

On January 1, 1954, the school was re-established in the old premises under the name of St. Hildegardis-Gymnasium after an application for the opening of the school had been submitted to the Ministry of Education on November 27, 1953. In 1960 the school was finally approved after testing for equivalence with other public schools.

Exactly 30 years to the day after the first Abitur at what was then the Oberlyzeum, the first Abitur took place at the St. Hildegardis Gymnasium on February 14, 1961, again all of the twelve candidates passed this time.

In 1964 the diocese of Essen took over the sponsorship of the Katholisches Bildungsverein e. V. for financial reasons to secure the school long-term.

In 1968, the new school authority began building the school building from scratch in order to take into account the ever increasing number of female pupils (over 1000 in the 1970s). The new main building was erected on the other side of the block on the corner of Realschulstrasse and Krummacherstrasse. After the old school building was demolished, another wing was built on Grünstraße, which in addition to the natural science rooms (physics, chemistry, biology and computer science) also houses a work room, two music rooms and the auditorium. On September 18, 1976, the completion of the work was celebrated with a large school festival.

In autumn 2007 the entire school went to Rome with all the students and teachers under the motto “cum omnibus Romam” (ambiguous, actually “with everyone to Rome”, jokingly “with the omnibus to Rome”).

On September 16, 2011, a building acquired by the school authorities for teaching in upper secondary level was inaugurated and put into operation in Grünstraße.

On June 6, 2013, the school authority informed the school boards that the St. Hildegardis-Gymnasium will also be open to boys from the 2014/2015 school year.

Sponsorship

As a private school, the school is privately owned by the diocese of Essen . It is recognized as a substitute school , the pupils can acquire their technical college entrance qualification or general university entrance qualification as at any other school .

Before that, the school was sponsored by the Catholic Educational Association until 1964 . V.

During his time as Bishop of Essen, Felix Genn had emphasized in a discussion with the college that - despite the well-known financial problems of the diocese - it would keep all levers in motion in order to maintain the school as an example of active Christian youth work.
