Herbert Giles
Herbert Allen Giles (born December 8, 1845 in Oxford , Oxfordshire , † February 13, 1935 in Cambridge , Cambridgeshire ) was a British sinologist .
Life
Between 1880 and 1893 he served in British colonial service in the Empire of China, and in 1897 he succeeded Thomas Wade as professor of Sinology at Cambridge University . Giles compiled the pioneering lexicon " A Chinese-English Dictionary " and refined the Wades transcription to the Wade-Giles system , which was authoritative for Western Sinology until the spread of Pinyin .
