The Herbert Grillo Comprehensive School is a comprehensive school for secondary levels I and II i. E. in the Duisburg district of Marxloh . The school is named after the German industrialist Herbert Grillo .

history

Until 1969 the school was the " Volksschule an der Diesterwegstraße", then until 1994 the community secondary school Diesterwegstraße. It has been a comprehensive school since 1994. On July 21, 2004 the name of the comprehensive school Duisburg-Marxloh was renamed to Herbert-Grillo-Gesamtschule . Students with a migration background are clearly in the majority. In the school year 2017/2018 the school will be attended by approx. 700 students. The school is 4 to 5 classes.

Educational offers

The classes in grades 5 to 10 are taught. In the upper level, the school cooperates with the Emschertal comprehensive school and the Elly-Heuss-Knapp-Gymnasium. The school is an all-day school where disabled and non-disabled pupils can learn together. In the afternoon there are working groups, musical, artistic and sporting lessons. The teachers work in class teams. The class teams consist of around 10 core teachers who cover most of the lessons in a class. The contact between students, teachers and parents is particularly intense. The self-reliant, team-oriented and independent learning of the students is of particular importance.

The school receives special financial support from the Herbert Grillo Foundation Gabriela Grillo .

Public attention

On December 2, 2004, the then Prime Minister Peer Steinbrück visited the Herbert Grillo Comprehensive School together with President Nikolaus Schneider . They took part in the pilot training course “Islamic instruction”.

Family Minister Ursula von der Leyen visited the school on September 14, 2006 at the end of a project week. Together with the actor Ralf Möller , she examined the results of the various working groups under the motto Strong types learn for life . The minister judged the students:

“The students have shown that, given the difficult conditions in their district, they will not let themselves get down. Despite the unfavorable starting opportunities, they are full of commitment, creativity and energy. We must further strengthen these properties. "

From May 13, 2008 to May 15, 2008 the school was visited by the dance project The Young Americans from the USA.

On November 24, 2009, NRW Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers and NRW School Minister Barbara Sommer visited together with actor Ralf Möller , FC Schalke 04 trainer Felix Magath and Olympic champion and world champion in weightlifting Rolf Milser as part of the continuation of the campaign “Learn strong types for life “the school.

In 2012 the school became the first I-pad school in the Düsseldorf administrative region. Tablet PCs and notebooks are still used in lessons today.

At the end of 2014 the process began to convert the Herbert Grillo comprehensive school into a district school. The main aim is to establish a close connection between school education and training with leisure, advisory, cultural and educational offers for all residents of the district. The feasibility study for this was completed in 2018. An architectural competition for a so-called campus building, which is to be erected on the school premises for this purpose, was carried out. The opening of the building is planned for the beginning of 2022.

In 2018, a report by reporter Donya Farahani about the school was broadcast, in which the everyday teaching life was examined.
