The comprehensive school Emschertal is a secondary school with an integrated upper secondary school in Duisburg . It has locations in the districts of Hamborn and Neumühl and is attended by around 1,000 students who are taught by around 100 teachers.

history

The comprehensive school Emschertal was founded in 1991 as the “Städtische Gesamtschule Duisburg Hamborn / Neumühl”. In the first school year, lessons took place in a wing of a neighboring school, as the actual school building had not yet been erected. For the second school year, the current building, which was still under renovation at the time, was moved into. In 1995 the school authorities decided that the upper school level should be taught at a second location in Duisburg-Hamborn from the 1997/98 school year. Since the school year 2000/01, the Emschertal comprehensive school has been cooperating with the UNESCO project school , the Clauberg Gymnasium , which is adjacent to the Hamborner location , in order to be able to offer high school students a broader range of subjects. All-day classes were introduced in the same year .

When the school expulsion decided in November 2007 that the Clauberg-Gymnasium should be closed for the 2009/10 school year, the Emschertal comprehensive school took over the transferred pupils. After the closure of the Clauberg-Gymnasium, the newly formed upper level was housed in the new school center in the premises of the former gymnasium. In the upper level, the school cooperates with the Herbert Grillo Comprehensive School . In 2010 the comprehensive school in Duisburg-Neumühl / Hamborn was renamed “Comprehensive School Emschertal”. As a result of this renaming, various collaborations began with the Emschergenossenschaft , in particular to support scientific projects such as climate change and environmental protection. The Emscher represents a point of reference for the school, as both locations are between the old and new Emscher and the Schmidthorst pumping station, built in 1929, is in the immediate vicinity of the school.

Architecture and buildings

The location in Neumühl has a sports hall that can be divided into two parts with an extendable grandstand and sound system . The main building has around 20 kitchens on the top floor that can be used by the students during study groups or other events. The cafeteria and a large foyer are located in the adjacent building . In 2012 the schoolyard was converted into a wetland habitat. Bees are kept on the grounds of the school garden by the Bienen AG .

In Hamborn, the cafeteria is also located in the main building. There is also a four-story tower on the school grounds where teaching is held. The auditorium offers seats for several hundred people. The acoustics in particular were taken into account during construction. There is a perforated back wall that absorbs the sound and thus prevents echoes . In other places on the wave-shaped ceiling and walls made of walnut , certain surfaces reflect the sound, others absorb it. In March 2012 it was restored and the fixed "cinema seating" was replaced by staggered platforms that can accommodate up to 500 chairs and 380 tables. The renovation costs were around 500,000 euros. Below the three-part gymnasium there are table tennis rooms and in another complex the Clauberg Hall , which was originally used as the entrance to the auditorium from the street side.

There is a bungalow near the school premises in Hamborn , which has three classrooms and a large laboratory . It is used for science lessons in the upper level, especially chemistry, and was built for this purpose.

Educational work

The school program focuses on independent, cooperative and social learning with the aim of attaining the best possible school-leaving qualification. In addition, people should be educated to “actively participate in society on their own responsibility”. The school participates in the Comenius program of the European Union , the aim of which is to promote cooperation between schools of all levels and types within the European Union, as well as the mobility of students and teachers. In the 2006/07 school year, the Emschertal comprehensive school became a correspondence school of the model project independent school .

In parallel to everyday school life, the Emschertal Comprehensive School promotes education for meaningful and active leisure activities as well as personal development through appropriate offers in specialist classes. The focus of the work in the second phase of the secondary level I is career and life planning, whereas the upper secondary level prepares for qualifications for professions with higher training requirements and for studying.

The school is characterized by its differentiated offer, its social work and its appearance in public. It works with the educational counseling center , the youth welfare office and the institute for youth welfare of the city of Duisburg. The school social work focuses on helping with personal or family crises, educational advice in connection with school and mediation in conflicts between students, teachers and parents.

The foreign languages English, French, Latin and Turkish are taught in lower secondary level . The upper secondary level extends the area to include the foreign language Spanish. In addition, subjects such as social studies, housekeeping, textile design and technology are offered. Physics lessons in the upper level take place at the nearby Elly-Heuss-Knapp-Gymnasium . There is also a school band , a lower secondary level choir and the opportunity to purchase a moped test certificate . In the 2009/10 school year, a theater group was organized as part of the literature class , which performed Büchner's drama Woyzeck in the auditorium at the end of the school year .

Public attention

Together with the founding of the school, the Friends' Association was created , which supports the school work with financial means and non-material aid. Between 2001 and 2004 there was a school newspaper , but its work was discontinued because the annual graduation newspapers and yearbooks provide a good insight into school life.

In 2003 the school carried out a charity walk along the Emscher to the Duisburg Zoo under the motto "Neumühl runs to the Rio Negro" to support the accommodation of the freshwater dolphins in the zoo. In the same year, a project was started in the youth meeting place of the concentration camp in Auschwitz , on the occasion of which there is an annual trip to the memorial.

The action man donated the school in the school year 2005/06 for the moped - AG with the project "Mobile in Neumühl" 5,000 euros.

In October 2010 there was another charity walk to the Duisburg Zoo. Half of the proceeds were used to create a nicer, more modern home for the spectacled bears in the zoo. The other half used the school to support their own projects.

As part of a project supported by the Rütgers Foundation , the conversion of the school garden into a biotope with a large pond and outdoor classroom began in February 2012 . In June 2012, the school won the “Bunt (d) für Duisburg” campaign, in which around 700 students from Duisburg submitted self-painted pictures on the topics of environmental protection and waste avoidance, from which four motifs were selected to be applied to white garbage trucks .

IT at the Neumühl location

A working group has been active since 2015, which is expanding IT: u. a. WLAN expansion, computer room setup, PC repairs.
