Herbert Mayr (musician)

Herbert Mayr (* 1961 in Wels ) is an Austrian double bass player and music teacher.

Mayr attended the music high school in Linz. From 1979 to 1981 he studied double bass with Heinrich Schneikart at the Vienna University of Music and until 1986 at the University of Vienna musicology with Ludwig Streicher . At the Accademia Chiagena he attended a master class with Franco Petracchi . He was a member of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (1981–83), the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (1983–85) and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra (1985–87) and solo double bass player of the Bavarian State Orchestra . Since 1989 he has been the solo double bass player of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra .

As a chamber musician, Mayr has performed with various ensembles of the Vienna Philharmonic and was a member of the Vienna Chamber Ensemble from 1989 to 2008 , with which he recorded numerous CDs. With Peter Herbert , Gina Schwarz , Timothy Dunin , Gerhard Muthspiel and Ernst Weissensteiner he founded the Bass Instinct ensemble . He also worked with Julia Stemberger , August Schmölzer , Michael Heltau , Wolfgang Muthspiel , Christian Muthspiel and Christopher Widauer , among others .

From 1992 to 1996 Mayr was a lecturer at the Vienna University of Music, from 2008 to 2012 at the Vienna Conservatory . Since 2008 he has also been a lecturer at the Angelika Prokopp Summer Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic. He also gave master classes in London, Madrid, Saarbrücken, Canberra and Sapporo, among others.

In 2014 he was awarded the Great Merit of the State of Salzburg.
