Herbert Obinger

Herbert Obinger (born February 26, 1970 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian political scientist and professor at the University of Bremen .

Live and act

Obinger studied political science at the University of Vienna , where he obtained a master's degree in philosophy in 1994 . After stays abroad at the Universities of Bern and Heidelberg , he also completed a degree in economics with a master's degree in Vienna in 1997 . In 1998 Obinger was awarded a doctorate from the University of Vienna for a thesis supervised by Emmerich Tálos and Wolfgang C. Müller . phil in political science. Between 1998 and 2000 he then worked as a research assistant for Manfred G. Schmidt at his chair at the University of Bremen . In October 2000, Obinger changed to the chair of Stephan Leibfried within the university . Obinger completed his habilitation in Bremen in 2004 and received the Venia legendi for political science.

Obinger then worked as a visiting scholar at Harvard University until 2005 . Since 2006 he has held the full professorship for comparative state activity research and comparative social policy at the University of Bremen. From 2008 to 2011 he was director of the Bremen Institute for Political Science, from 2010 to 2015 director of the Center for Social Policy. Since 2015 he has been director of the Political Economy of the Welfare State at SOCIUM . From 2012 to 2015, Obinger was also a part-time professor at the Center for Welfare State Research at the Syddansk University in Odense .

Obinger is married and has two children. His main research interests are in the area of state welfare , especially in the German and Austrian systems and their comparison with other international systems as well as the relationship between the welfare state and the wars of the 20th century.
