Herbert Pätzold (born May 13, 1922 ) is a former German soccer player. From 1950 to 1953 he played for BSG Mechanik / Motor / Wismut Gera in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

After the end of the Second World War, Herbert Pätzold belonged to the group of athletes who revived football in Gera, Thuringia , after all sports clubs had previously been banned by the Soviet occupying forces. He was initially a player at SG Gera-Untermhaus and SG Gera-Pforten, before he moved to the company sports community (BSG) RFT Gera at the end of the 1940s . With her he played in the Thuringia regional class until 1950 . In September 1950, the third-class BSG RFT merged with the upper division BSG Gera-Süd to form BSG Mechanik Gera.

Pätzold was taken over into the newly formed league team of BSG Mechanik and was used from the 1st match day. Although he could not play after the 27th matchday due to injury, he had played 26 games by then and was Geraer's top scorer with 20 goals at the end of the season, although he had been called up as a midfielder in most games. In the match on the 15th matchday between BSG Mechanik and KWU Weimar , he contributed five goals in the 8-0 win. Also in the 1951/52 season, in which the Gera team competed in the league as BSG Motor, Pätzold was the team's top scorer, this time together with Manfred Kaiser , who both scored ten times in the league games. Pätzold, who only missed three of 36 league games, played mainly as a half right attacker this season. On the right side of the storm he was also used in 1952/53, but only scored four goals in his 24 league appearances (out of a total of 32). So he was also responsible for the general goal doldrums of his team, which had the worst goal balance in this season with 32:71 and had to be relegated from the league. Pätzold then no longer played in the league, but with his 34 goals he was the most accurate shooter of all Gera league seasons. During his senior league years he also played four games with the Thuringia national team.

Pätzold played for the Geraer BSG until 1962, from 1953 on as Wismut Gera, in the second-rate GDR league . Apart from the 1953/54 season, in which he could only play four point games, he was a regular player until 1960 and was a goal scorer in every season. Only in his last season 1961/62, which ran over 39 rounds due to the change from the calendar year to the summer-spring game year, Pätzold remained without scoring and only played eleven point games. After the end of his career as a professional footballer, he was able to point to a record of 242 point games and 56 goals for the Geraer BSG.
