Herbert Schliefsteiner

Herbert Schliefsteiner (born January 28, 1925 in Neuberg an der Mürz , Styria , † March 2, 2009 there ) was an Austrian animal painter, ornithologist and museum founder.

Life

Herbert Schliefsteiner attended the Graz School of Applied Arts . But he found his professional career at the bank. In his free time he worked as a landscape, animal and plant painter. He was able to make numerous sketches while traveling to various nature reserves in Europe and Africa. He was also able to build up a considerable natural history private collection.

He designed the zoological showrooms in the Leoben City Museum . In 1984 he became a consultant at the Joanneum in Graz.

He illustrated and designed the Austrian nature guide written by the biologist and textbook author Franz Höpflinger, a guide with 2,000 illustrations of flora and fauna in the Alps and Pannonian regions . Illustrations by Herbert Schliefensteiner can also be found in numerous school and teaching books, as well as in the book Animal and Plant Watercolors .

In 1991 he opened the Naturmuseum Neuberg, where he also showed his private collection.
