Ylfete Fanaj (born July 11, 1982 in Prizren , SFR Yugoslavia , today Kosovo ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ) and has been Cantonal Councilor of Lucerne since April 2011 . On June 23, 2020, she was elected President of the Cantonal Council for the 2020/2021 period with 91 out of 117 votes.

biography

Ylfete Fanaj was born on July 11, 1982 in the southern Kosovar city of Prizren, which at the time was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Her father worked as a seasonal worker in Switzerland in the 1980s . In 1990 his wife and two younger siblings from Ylfete moved in, while she and the older sister stayed with their grandmother. When the political situation in Kosovo worsened in 1991, Ylfete and her older sister followed the family to Central Europe and started school in Sursee .

Ylfete Fanaj completed the middle level of lower secondary level and also attended the 10th school year as an interim solution, as she could not find an apprenticeship position. Then she found an apprenticeship at ECAP Central Switzerland as a clerk . In 2003, she started as a secretary to the specialized body integration of Lucerne and made the part-time vocational diploma , which she graduated of 2005. In 2009 she finished her studies in social work at the University of Lucerne and graduated with a bachelor's degree . She then worked as a social worker in the health promotion and integration department for the canton of Nidwalden . She subsequently obtained a Master of Science of Social Work from the universities of Bern, Lucerne, St. Gallen and Zurich.

Political career

Ylfete Fanaj began her political career organizing and for Secondos , the Lucerne branch of Second @ s Plus Switzerland . In 2007 she joined the board of this association. In the same year she was also elected to the city ​​council of Lucerne as a candidate for the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland . In 2008 she took a seat on the board of the Swiss association of Secondos and became its president in 2009. Since 2006, she has been a member of the management of the SP City of Lucerne in the communications department and in March 2011 moved to the management of the party's cantonal section.

In April 2011 she was elected to the Lucerne Cantonal Council. Fanaj was the first Swiss cantonal councilor with Kosovar roots. She was elected for a second term in March 2015 and was re-elected in 2019. In the Cantonal Council she was initially a member of the State Political Commission. She then became a member and later Vice-President of the Justice and Security Commission. She is currently Vice President of the Supervisory and Control Commission. Since June 17, 2019, Fanaj has also been Vice-President of the Cantonal Council and thus its President-elect for the 2020/2021 period.

Fanaj ran for a seat on the National Council in the Swiss parliamentary elections in 2011 and 2015 , without being elected. She is running again in the parliamentary elections on October 20, 2019 .

Activities in clubs

Fanaj is active in various associations in the social field. She is a board member of the association LISA - Lucerne Association for the Interests of Sex Workers and the Association Center for Intercultural Education - ZIB as well as advisory board of the contact and contact point Sans-Papiers Lucerne and the fan work Lucerne. She is also a member of the Social Cohesion Commission of the Catholic Church in Lucerne. Fanaj is married and lives with her husband in the city of Lucerne.
