Michał Szembek
Michael Szembek (* 1650 in Morawica , Poland ; † June 1726 in Kraków ) was abbot in Mogiła and auxiliary bishop in Kraków from 1706 to 1726.
Life
The son of the castellan of Kraków and Starost von Biecz , Franciszek Szembek († 1693) and Zofia Pieniążek († 1671) studied at the University of Kraków , where he also received his doctorate . On September 13, 1706 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Cracow and titular bishop of Paphus . In 1714 he called the Sisters of Charity to Krakow to look after abandoned children of the city. He founded a hospital and an orphanage in Krakow. He was also a co-founder of the Missionary Church in Stradom.
His brothers were Stanisław Szembek (1650-1721), cardinal and as Archbishop of Gniezno Primate of Poland-Lithuania, and Christoph Anton Szembek (1667-1748), Bishop of Lemberg , Posen , Gnesen and thus also Primate of Poland. His half-brothers were Ludwig Szembek, canon in Cracow, and Christoph Andreas Johann Szembek (1680–1740), Bishop of Chełm , Przemyśl and Warmia .
Michael Szembek was buried in the Reformatów crypt (Franciscan monastery) in Krakow, his mummified remains have now been restored and are on display.
