The Kielder Water is a reservoir in Northumberland , England . The North Tyne flows through the reservoir. The reservoir is surrounded by the Kielder Forest , the largest - albeit man-made - forest in England.
The reservoir was built between 1975 and 1981 and was primarily intended to provide water to the north-east of England. Queen Elizabeth II opened the reservoir in 1982. The reservoir is operated by Northumbrian Water . As part of Northumbrian Water Drought plan of the dam can also River Derwent below the Derwent Reservoir fill.
A weir separates the Bakethin Reservoir in the north from Kielder Water in the south.
With a capacity of 200 million liters, Kielder Water is the largest reservoir in Great Britain in terms of volume.
In 2004, RWE took over the generation of electricity with the help of the water via turbines in the dam from 2005 to 2025 and operates the most powerful hydropower plant in England with an output of just over 6 MW .
The lake and its surroundings are well developed for tourists and a popular recreational area. The Kielder Water Sailing Club, for example, operates sailing on the reservoir, and in 1997 the Kielder Water Bird of Prey Center opened the largest bird of prey park in northern England on the south-west bank of the lake.
