Herbert Smith (soccer player)

Herbert Smith (born November 22, 1877 in Witney , Oxfordshire , † January 6, 1951 ibid) was an English football player .

Smith was mainly active in amateur sports, but also appeared regularly for Reading FC in the Southern League to professional league games and even became team captain there . The other football teams Smith has played for in the course of his career were, in addition to his hometown club Witney FC , Oxford City , Derby County , Stoke (later: "Stoke City"), Richmond Association and a selection from Oxfordshire.

At the Olympic football tournament in London in 1908 , he came with the English amateur national team , which competed as the selection of Great Britain , in all three games and won the gold medal. During this tournament he also played for his club in Reading.

In addition to his seventeen appearances for the amateur team, the left defender made four international matches for the English national team between 1905 and 1906 and was able to win all of these games.

Smith, who was also active as a cricketer , became president of the Oxfordshire Football Association after his active sporting life and held this position until his death in January 1951.
