Herbert Stockmann

Herbert Stockmann (born May 15, 1913 in Schönebeck (Elbe) , † November 12, 1947 in Halle an der Saale ) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Life

Stockmann was born the son of a worker and attended an elementary school in Schönebeck from 1919 to 1927. He then learned the painting trade by 1931. From 1931 to 1933 he studied in Magdeburg with Wilhelm Deffke , Ernst Hoffmann , Richard Winckel and Franz Fiebiger at the Magdeburg School of Applied Arts and Crafts .

For a short time in 1935 he went to the academies in Prague and Paris before meeting Paul Klee in Bern in 1936 and 1937 . He completed a study trip to twelve European and North African countries. In 1939 he presented a special exhibition of his works in Tripoli .

In 1939 he was arrested for political reasons while visiting his wife and son in Magdeburg. In Germany the National Socialists had banned him from painting . He had to do military service and was seriously injured.

He returned to Magdeburg in 1945. Here he later joined the SED and was involved in the Kulturbund . In Magdeburg he presented a special exhibition with his works.

In October 1946 he was appointed teacher at the Burg Giebichenstein art school in Halle / Saale.

Stockmann faced serious allegations of crimes committed before and after the Second World War and committed suicide in 1947 at Giebichenstein Castle.

Honor

The city of Magdeburg named a street in his honor ( Stockmannweg ).

Stockmann created paintings, etchings and drawings. Above all, views of Magdeburg and the region as well as works with a political background have been preserved.
