Herbert Tucholski
Herbert Tucholski (born June 21, 1896 in Konitz / Chojnice in West Prussia , † March 29, 1984 in Berlin ) was a German painter , graphic artist and publicist .
Life
Tucholski, the son of a customs secretary, attended the Berlin School of Applied Arts from 1913 to 1915 , where he studied glass painting and writing with Ludwig Sütterlin . He took part in the First World War from 1915 and continued his studies in 1919. 1920–1925 he studied at the Dresden Art Academy with Richard Müller , Max Feldbauer and Ludwig von Hofmann . 1926–1928 he was an intern at the Berlin Academy of the Arts .
1929–1930 he stayed on a scholarship at the Villa Romana in Florence and at the German Academy in the Villa Massimo in Rome . In Rome he became acquainted with the sculptor Max Wimmer. After his return to Berlin, he ran a youth home until 1933. During this time he created watercolors , pastels , pen drawings and a large number of woodcuts . In 1933 he joined the Klosterstrasse studio community and worked with Käthe Kollwitz and Hermann Blumenthal . In 1939 he was awarded the “Rome Prize” by the German Academy Villa Massimo . 1957–1959 he was a mentor for graphics at the Institute for Fine Arts of the GDR in East Berlin, 1962–1965 head of the central workshop for graphics. In 1964 Tucholski was appointed professor. Since 1964 he worked for the magazine Die Weltbühne .
In 1979 he was awarded the National Prize of the GDR, 2nd class for art and literature. He is buried in the cemetery of the Dorotheenstadt and Friedrichswerder communities in Berlin-Mitte.
His brother was the guitarist Gerhard Tucholski .
