Herbert Weiß (politician)

Herbert Weiß (born October 20, 1927 in Graz ; † January 26, 2007 there ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ), trade unionist and judicial officer. He was a member of the Federal Council from 1985 to 1993 .

education and profession

Weiß completed elementary school between 1933 and 1937 and then attended the Bundesrealgymnasium in Graz from 1938 to 1946. He then studied law at the University of Graz from 1946 and entered the service of the Austrian judiciary in 1948, working for the Graz Higher Regional Court. He had to give up his studies in 1948 for family reasons. In 1952 he passed the Rechtspfleger examination and in 1964 took over the management of the personnel department at the Graz Higher Regional Court. He held this position until his retirement in 1992, in which year he was also appointed councilor .

After his death on February 4, 2007, Weiß was buried at the central cemetery in Graz.

Politics and functions

According to the historian Michael Wladika, Weiss applied for membership in the NSDAP on August 12, 1944 , which took place retroactively as of April 20, 1944. He was assigned the membership number 9,849,403. After 1945, Weiß became a member of the Austrian People's Party and was also active in the Austrian Workers 'and Employees' Union (ÖAAB), where he was Deputy Chairman of the ÖAAB Styria from 1978 to 1993. He was also active for a long time in the public service union (GÖD) and was active as a member of the regional executive committee of GÖD Styria from 1965 to 1977, he was also chairman of the regional justice section of GÖD Styria from 1969 to 1979 and from 1973 to 1977 Group chairman of the Christian trade unionist group of GÖD Styria. In addition, from 1973 to 1993 he was a member of the central board of GÖD and from 1977 to 1993 chairman of the regional board of GÖD Styria. In the ÖVP he held the function of district party chairman of the ÖVP Graz- Jakomini from 1984 to 1993 . He represented the ÖVP Styria from July 1, 1985 to April 30, 1993 in the Federal Council.
