Herbert de Castro

Herbert de Castro (born January 18, 1905 in Panama City , † 1969 ) was a Panamanian composer and conductor.

De Castro, who came from a traditional Jewish family, went to Paris in 1923 , where he became a student a. a. by Albert Roussel , Arthur Honegger , Jean Huré , George Caussade , Simone Plé-Caussade and Diran Alexanian .

After his return to Panama he founded the Orquestra de la Unión Musical in 1939 and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional in 1941 , of which he was director until 1944 . That year he went to New York, where he studied orchestral conducting with Jean Morel and composition with Norman Dello Joio . After his return to Panama, he again directed the Orquestra Sinfónica Nacional.

As a representative of the Sociedad Daniel de Concierto , he organized performances by Yehudi Menuhin , Isaac Stern , Andrés Segovia , Mischa Elman , Arthur Rubinstein , Jesus Maria San Roma , Gregor Piatigorsky , Claudio Arrau , János Sándor and Alexis Weissenberg in Panama.
