In December 2004, the "von Kaven Foundation" was brought into being as an unincorporated foundation administered by the German Research Foundation (DFG) by its founder Herbert von Kaven and the Executive Board of the DFG. The purpose of the foundation is achieved by awarding a von Kaven Prize for Mathematics. The prize is currently endowed with 10,000 euros.

The selection decision for the von Kaven Prize is made by the DFG's Mathematics Review Board in accordance with the foundation statutes. It is not possible to apply for the von Kaven Prize on your own initiative. The von Kaven Prize is usually given to the best applicant from mathematics in the DFG's Heisenberg program from the previous year as a special award. Since 2017, mathematics scholars have also been included in the selection in the Emmy Noether Program.
