Gitta Kutyniok (born September 22, 1972 in Bielefeld ) is a German mathematician and has been an Einstein Professor of Mathematics at the Technical University of Berlin since 2011 .

Professional

Kutyniok studied mathematics and computer science at the University of Paderborn from 1991 to 1996 . She received her doctorate from the University of Paderborn in 2000 and her habilitation in 2006 from the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . From 2004 to 2005 she was a DFG scholarship holder at Washington University in St. Louis and at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, USA. After her habilitation, she did research as a Heisenberg fellow from the DFG at Princeton University , Stanford University and Yale University . She then was Professor of Applied Analysis at the University of Osnabrück from 2008 to 2011 , before accepting a professorship at the Technical University of Berlin in 2011 , where she has been an Einstein Professor of Mathematics and the Chair of Applied Functional Analysis . In 2014 she also taught as a visiting professor at the ETH Zurich . Since 2018 she has also had a second membership in the Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin.

Kutyniok has been the main coordinator of the DFG-SPP “Compressed Sensing in Information Processing” together with Rudolf Mathar ( RWTH Aachen ) since 2014 and has also been the Scientific and Executive Director of the “Berlin International Graduate School in Model and Simulation based Research (BIMoS) ) ". Since 2018 she has been the spokesperson for the DFG-GRK "Differential Equation- and Data-Driven Models in Life Sciences and Fluid Dynamics (DAEDALUS)".

She is editor of various scientific journals, in particular Acta Applicandae Mathematicae, Advances in Computational Mathematics, IEEE Signal Processing Letters, IEEE Transactions on Information Theory (Associate Editor for Signal Processing), Journal of Approximation Theory, Journal of Fourier Analysis and Applications, Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision, SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences and SIAM Journal on Mathematics of Data Science, as well as member of the Advisory Board of the book series “Applied and Numerical Harmonic Analysis” by Birkhäuser-Springer.

research

Gitta Kutynioks work areas include the applied harmonic analysis , compressed sensing , frame theory , Imaging Science, inverse problems , machine learning , numerical analysis of partial differential equations , sparse - approximation theory and various applications in life sciences and telecommunications. In particular, she was significantly involved in the development of the Shearlets, an anisotropic multiscale display system, which demonstrably has optimal sparse approximation properties. It is used in particular in the sparse regularization of inverse problems. Other important research results include the development of Fusion Frames, a mathematical concept for modeling distributed systems, the analysis of the separation of data by means of convex optimization and the construction of demonstrably memory-optimal deep neural networks .

Memberships

Gitta Kutyniok is a member of numerous societies, committees and advisory boards. Since 2012 she has been a founding member and chairman of the GAMM technical committee “Mathematical Signal and Image Processing”, as well as a board member of the Berlin Mathematical School (BMS). She has also been a member of the SampTA Steering Committee and the SPARS Steering Committee since 2013 and was a member of the selection committee for the NaFöG Elsa Neumann scholarships of the State of Berlin and chair of the IPODI selection committee from 2013 to 2018. In 2014 she was elected to the board of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) and one year later to the board of the Einstein Center for Mathematics Berlin (ECMath). She has been working as a consultant for the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) since 2015 . In 2016 she was elected to the boards of the DFG-SFB / TR 109 “Discretization in Geometry and Dynamics” and the DFG-GRK “BIOphysical Quantitative Imaging Towards Clinical Diagnosis (BIOQIC)”. From the same year until 2018 she was Vice-Chair of the SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Sciences and a member of the GAMM-Juniors selection committee. Since 2018 she has also been a board member of the SFB 1114, a member of the international START / Wittgenstein jury and chair of the SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Sciences.
